About...
Beverly Brutzkus, Independent College Counselor
After earning a BA degree in Psychology with a minor in Education from the University of California at Davis, I had a career in retail management. My corporate positions required attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills (characteristics required of college consultants!).
Years later, as a parent volunteer at a high school's College and Career Center in the Conejo Valley of Southern California, I witnessed the struggles that many students and their families experienced during the college planning process. The challenges of "average" students and those with learning differences were especially obvious.
After completing a curriculum of college consulting courses and an internship at a local high school, I graduated with "Distinction" from the UCLA College Counseling Certificate Program.
Staying current on the constantly changing trends in the college admissions process is important to me. I often visit colleges and universities and meet with admissions officers (Click on the "Recent Campus Visits" link below to see schools I have toured). Additionally, I maintain my professional competency by attending conferences, seminars, webinars, and college fairs and by establishing contacts with other college consulting professionals.
When I am not working with my high school and transfer clients, I have volunteered as a virtual counselor for ScholarMatch, and as an essay reader for the UC Davis Cal Aggie Alumni Association, the UCLA Alumni's Freshman and Transfer Scholarships, and the "Stop the Hate®: Youth Speak Out" essay contest. I am a Board Member of the Westlake Village Community Foundation, which awards scholarships to local high school seniors, a Professional Member of Higher Education Consultants (HECA) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC).
No matter where you live, I welcome the opportunity to provide professional, friendly, and individualized services for your child as they learn about the application process and find a college that will fit their academic, social, and financial needs.
